Redskins Officially Fire Scot McCloughan, Citing "Alcohol Issues"

PFT - On Thursday’s PFT Live, Washington G.M. Scot McCloughan’s agent said McCloughan is healthy and that McCloughan’s recent absence from the team is unrelated to alcohol issues.

The team apparently disagrees; according to the Washington Post, the franchise fired McCloughan.

An unnamed source (really gutsy, Washington) attributed the decision to McCloughan’s “ongoing problems with alcohol.”

“He’s had multiple relapses due to alcohol,” the unnamed source told the Post. “He showed up in the locker room drunk on multiple occasions. .?.?. This has been a disaster for 18 months.” The source also said McCloughan “has received alcohol treatment” since joining the team, and the source suggested that McCloughan was fired by both the 49ers and Seahawks for alcohol abuse.

Well, it happened. They officially fired Scot. We knew it was going to happen, not if, but when. And the when was tonight, and the reason they cited was alcohol, which is sort of what everyone has assumed, and what I’ve hinted at multiple times this week. The Redskins have been very sensitive about it, which is probably the best thing they’ve ever done. It is interesting, however, that they are straight calling him out right now, saying he has relapsed several times and shown up drunk in the locker room on “multiple occasions”.

Or has he?

“Of a half-dozen Redskins players reached Thursday afternoon, none said they’d ever seen McCloughan drink in the locker room,” the Post explains. “All but one said they never saw him act if he weren’t composed and in control. They added that they never felt he wasn’t able to do his job, and they seemed surprised the question was being raised.”

OH BOY!

So what is happening here? Has Scot relapsed? Are they using it as an excuse to push him out the door? That would be soooo fucked up, taking someone’s past problems with alcohol and claiming he relapsed and it affected his job performance to fire him. Can you even imagine? Making up alcoholism to fire someone in order to take back power, wow. That’s a helllll of an accusation, should it not be true. I can’t even imagine.

Now…here’s my thoughts: I think Scot was back on the booze. I don’t know if that’s fucked up to say or not, but everything I’ve heard, everyone I’ve talked to, everyone seems to corroborate the story. I don’t buy the conspiracy that Cooley floated it to start the rumor, that they kept him from the combine to continue the storyline, none of that. If it affected his job performance though, that is much more important. If it did, that’s reason to fire a guy. If not, obviously Bruce Allen is all fucked up in the head. But for now, all we know is Scot has been fired twice before due to alcohol problems. Nothing would make me happier than to be wrong, but too much adds up to this conclusion. It sucks, it really sucks.
